This is "Hair," a fanciful Gilchrist piece picturing a young girl playing a, "hide from the photographer" game. The portrait was commissioned by her parents and she was pretending to resist. Gilchrist played along and managed this fantastic image. The bazaar light, and the girls hair is, according to the artist, completely natural. This light hearted piece is an 14 inch by 11 inch Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Print on Ilford double weight paper. It was captured in the mid 1970's and is entitled "Farmer Vic And The Butterfly." This hand crafted image is printed, titled and signed by the artist. The actual image measures 10 inches by 10 inches.

The graphic power of this Gilchrist composition comes through but this low resolution Net image can't do the print real justice. Even though it's deep in shadow, Vic's heavily wrinkled face is rich with detail and the negative is perfectly focused on the butterfly.

In the artists words: " As a young man, Vic had come from the south to work in the Chicago steel mills. He worked hard, retired early and bought a 30 acre farm in southern Illinois, happy to be close to the earth again. As we walked, he proudly showed me his rolling property and told me his stories. Eventually we climbed a hill to a beautiful meadow filled with hundreds of butterflies. One of them landed on his face and even though he was very camera shy, suddenly beamed a toothless smile at me. I managed to get this single shot before she took off. Later, when I told the story to the family, Vic's granddaughter told him he had been kissed by an angel. He just smiled and smiled."

This image of the Artist's niece Rebecca Yody, was captured in 1971; another Gilchrist piece on the edge of surrealism. We asked the artist about this one and he said, "Becky has always been very creative and theatrical being and, as usual, was haming-it-up. She moved behind this beautiful antique glass, making faces at me. The light was there and I was there, pure luck. Her eyes! Wow!"
