#118. 1972: Racing Personality, Shirley Muldowney in Funny Car
This image was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on July 28, 1972. Shirley Muldowney is one of the most famous names in sports history. Here we see the beautiful woman in an introspective mood, casually resting in the drivers seat, deep in thought. Notice Cha Cha's striped pants.... very 70's! This pioneer female was the first woman to break into the very competitive and macho sport of professional Drag Racing and she beat the best on a regular basis. She is a living legend and still races a competitive Top Fuel Dragster in the verious nitro wars. Viva Cha Cha!
#174. 1972 F/C: Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney - Burnout
Funny Car Fans: Here we see "Cha Cha" Muldowney, boiling the tires on the "Bounty Huntress" Mustang Funny Car. It was captured at Thompson Drag Raceway (Thompson, Ohio) on July 28, 1972. The match race of the evening featured a bunch of big names and Shirley, the first Professional female Drag Racer, was part of a great Funny Car show. This image is particularly interesting, having a great feeling of motion. The unusual effect was created through the combination of a relatively long shutter speed and another photographer's weaker flash which created a subtle ghost image on the Gilchrist negative. A happy accident.
#131. 1973 F/C: Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney - Burnout
Here's one picturing the famous Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney in the middle of a huge burnout. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) in July, 1973. This low resolution Net image doesn't do the print justice (see enlargement). In July 1973, Dragway 42 hosted a AHRA summer event featuring a bunch of big names. This Funny car was called "The Bounty Huntress." Shirley, the first Professional female Nitro Drag Racer, always had her foot in it and never failed to put on a great show. Here we see her in the middle of a giant burnout, the background obliterated by the burnout in the other lane.
#269. 1973 F/C: Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney - Launch
This print pictures the famous Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney launching past the tree. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on May 24, 1973. Here we see her charging past the tree, left front wheel just off the ground, slicks rippling. Notice the rear spoiler: Very large and steep for 1973.
#240. 1973 Personalities: Cha Cha, Jungle Jim and Jungle Pam
Here's an image picturing three Drag Racing Icons in the same image.... "Jungle Pam" Hardy, "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on May 24, 1973. This low resolution Net image doesn't do the print justice (very sharp with a full range of tones). A lot of big names were at Dragway 42 for an AHRA National event. Here we see the three huge stars involved in a starting line debate. We have no idea what they are discussing but Shirley looks a little irritated while Jim and Pam seem to be listening intently (interesting body language). You could spend weeks making up captions for this one.
#232. 1980 Top Fuel: Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney - Burnout
Top Fuel fans: This one pictures the first lady of drag racing laying a hot traction path across the starting line. It was captured at Dragway 42 (West Salem, Ohio) on July 26, 1980. The hand crafted print is titled and signed by the artist in black ink. This close up wide angle image was captured at dusk and has a great feeling of speed. What a beautiful car! Notice the ultra smooth nose piece/wing. In 1980, Shirley was already a living legend and in 2002, she's still at it.
