This dramatic piece is an 14 inch by 11 inch Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Print. It was captured in 1990 and is entitled "Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Angel Fire, New Mexico." The Vietnam Veterans National Memorial rests on a craggy hill overlooking Eagle Nest Lake in a beautiful high valley located in the loftiest mountains of northern New Mexico. The 13,151 foot Wheeler Peak (the highest mountain in New Mexico) lies in close proximity.

We asked the artist about this piece and he said, "I spent hours hanging out at the Memorial. That whole wilderness area is fantastic. It's high (over 10,000 feet) and quiet. I got pretty introspective, thinking about the Vietnam war and the veterans and the passage of twenty years. I just walked around and around the unusual building and eventually made this wide angle image through a red filter."

This low resolution Net image can't do the print justice (much sharper than it appears). This is a typical Gilchrist composition, bold and graphic with both abstract and surrealistic qualities. The course textures of the rocks and spiky grasses work in dramatic contrast to the smooth white Memorial as it arches into a black sky.... a very contemplative piece.

Approximately 1000 years ago, Chaco Canyon, New Mexico was the center of the complex native American culture known as the Anasazi (the ancient ones). The Anasazi occupied an area about the size of Ireland. Among other things, these remarkable people mapped (extremely accurately) the movements of the heavens. They were intimately familiar with the movement of the Sun and the Summer Solstice was a major moment of each year. This great Gilchrist photograph (shadows down a ruined Chaco Canyon wall) was captured at high moon, on June 21, 1992 (the highest moment of the Summer Solstice).

This large Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Print entitled "Reo Grand Gorge" This dynamically composed full fame 35 mm hand crafted image is printed, titled and signed by the artist. This wonderful photograph is an exceptionally successful example of Gilchrist's continuing interest in changing the angle of the horizon, creating a very different look in landscape.

The famous Reo Grand river begins high in the mountains and runs down to the Gulf. In the northern, New Mexico section (very close to Taos) it races through a deep gorge. This image, although it appears to be taken from the air, was captured from a tall bridge just East of Taos, looking South toward the Jemez Mountain range. The dark, back lit clouds of the winter sky play against the snow, rock and water: Moody and wonderful. Very collectible.

This shimmering 11 by 14 is a double exposure was created in the northern New Mexico wilderness (1989). Charles found this tree and rocks arranged at the edge of a gigantic field of wild sage. At that time the artist was experimenting with, "in camera double exposures." A close up of the sage textures was exposed on top the tree and rocks to create this image. It's very surreal and wonderful; a textural and tonal delight (see detail below.
