These two offerings are 11 inch by 14 inch Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Prints (variations on the same compositional theme). They were captured on the artist's second trip to Hong Kong (2002). These beautifully textural full fame 35 mm hand crafted images (double exposures) are printed, titled and signed by the artist. Both image sizes are approximately 8.5 inches by 12.5 inches, printed on 11 inch by 14 inch Ilford double weight paper. These relatively flat, low resolution Net images don't do the prints justice (extremely sharp and rich in shadow detail). Click on the images or titles for enlargements.

Here Gilchrist interprets Hong Kong as an abstracted mix of signs and symbols, both Western and Chinese. They hold an extremely wide range of significant tones (millions). We ask Charles about these pieces and he said: "I was on the back streets, making double exposures, working with long lenses and compressing architectural forms, signs, and that one tree up on top. Of course you don't exactly know what's going to happen with a double exposure but that's the exciting part. You have to underexpose each image and let them build density together. I suppose its a matter of chance combined with an educated guess; kind of a left and right brain exercise. When they work, like these, it's a happy accident, and really thrilling when you finally see the negative and know you have a good one. This time I managed two in a row."

Here's a strange one. Glazed ducks (including heads and eyes) hanging in a Hong Kong butcher shop window. We asked Gilchrist about it: "Luckily, through friends, I was being introduced to some very exotic Chinese foods, and was thinking about these new tastes and smells, and the way the food looks in Hong Kong. And suddenly I see these naked dead ducks in a window, wrapped and designed around thin rods like a sculpture. I knew it was a common occurrence in that part of the world but for me it was surrealistic."

When asked about this image, Charles said; "I think I understand dragons, Western and Eastern. I was born in the year of the dragon, 1940. Anyway, I like this guy: He's looking straight up and spouting off. It could be a self portrait. The light was beautiful and I found the angle. For me, Hong Kong is one of the truly stimulating areas of the world."
