In 1986, a representative of the Cleveland Orchestra approached Charles, commissioning him to create an image to be used for an advertising campaign connecting a sponsoring fashion outlet with The Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. We ask the artist for details and he said: "They showed up at my studio with a bunch of beautiful dresses, fashion accessories and musical instruments. Their idea was to include one of my fashion models interacting with the instruments. Unfortunately, the budget was too low to include a professional model and the problem had me scratching my head. I came up with this composition a few days later. They loved it."

This Hasselblad image is extremely sharp and textural with a full range of rich tones. Even though the piece was originally conceived for advertising it stands on it's own as Fine Art and makes a wonderful addition to any musically related collection. Throughout the ages, few icons have had the powerful appeal of Rodin's "Thinker." This incredible photograph (captured at The Cleveland Museum Of Art) hints at one of the strangest events in the storied history of this sculpture. During the Viet Nam war, an extremist attempted to blow this fabulous sculpture to bits in protest against "the wealthy establishment." Rather than attempting restoration, the museum chose to create a new pedestal for "The Thinker," displaying it with the feet blown apart but it's power fully intact. The dynamite damage can be clearly seen in the photograph, hence the Gilchrist title, "Still Thinking." The time exposer (with off camera flash) was triggered at dusk and the entire sculpture is beautifully separated against the darkening sky.

This piece is a touching little 8 in. by 10 in. Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Print entitled "Good Friday." It was captured in Munich, Germany on good Friday, 1987. The full frame 35 mm image measures 9 inches by 6 inches and is printed on 8 inch by 10 inch Ilford paper by the artist. It is also signed and titled by the artist in black ink.

When asked about this image, Charles said; "We were in Munich and I was sitting in the second pew of a fabulous Catholic church in the heart of the city.... just soaking in the atmosphere. It was beautiful light but very weak. Candles were burning. Suddenly, I saw this ancient tiny woman tottering up to the crucified Christ. I kneeled down and braced my 180 mm lens on the pew. I read the light, opened the lens up all the way (F.2.8) and set the shutter speed at a 30th. As she slowly kneeled down, I thought of all the years she had practiced this timeless ritual. Her lifetime of devotion was obvious. The moment came. I held my breath and squeezed the shutter ever so gently. The Nikon held still and I knew I had a good one! I'll never forget that moment.... my hair stood on end. It's a very difficult negative to print. It's a little thin in a few places and takes a lot of tricky dodging and burning in but it's still one of my favorites."
