#804. Taos, NM. "Taos Puppy Dreaming" - 8" x 10" Silver Gelatin Print

This is a sweet little 8 inch by 10 inch Fine Arts Silver Gelatin Print on Agfa Brovira. This piece (captured in 1989) is entitled "Taos Puppy Dreaming." The hand crafted image is printed, titled and signed by the artist. The full frame 35 M.M. image measures 4.6 inches by 7 inches printed on 8 inch by 10 inch paper. This is a beautifully subtle print which can't be appreciated by viewing this low resolution Net image.

We asked the artist about the image and he said: "I was spending another day at the Taos Pueblo, just taking in the Native American atmosphere and stocking photographic opportunities. There are always numerous semi wild dogs and cats hanging out at the Pueblo. This friendly little guy was scoring lots of treats from the tourists and his belly was getting bigger and bigger. Suddenly, he just flopped down and fell asleep, totally relaxed and full, legs straight out.

Pig lovers unite for the lowly African Wart Hog, A.K.A. (Phacochoerus Aethiopicus). She's really quite interesting in a unkempt wild pig kind of way. Her long thin hair is particularly strange.

#808. "Fender At Play," - 8" x 10" Silver Gelatin Print

This is a very graphic image of a black kitten at play. He lives with a musician and his name is Fender (after the famous guitars). Gilchrist grabbed this shot at his friends home and we can see that even in a spontaneous and obviously low light situation, Gilchrist remains a sensitive designer. The composition is simple, bold, and yet interesting as the shapes are beautifully placed. The white paper which Fender is clutching is relatively sharp and well modeled whereas the kitten is a deep pool of the blackest black, his eye floating in the darkness and on the camera.... very abstract and delightful.

Here's a strange one. Glazed ducks (including heads and eyes) hanging in a Hong Kong butcher shop window. We asked Gilchrist about it: "Luckily, through friends, I was being introduced to some very exotic Chinese foods, and was thinking about these new tastes and smells, and the way the food looks in Hong Kong. And suddenly I see these naked dead ducks in a window, wrapped and designed around thin rods like a sculpture. I knew it was a common ocurance in that part of the world but for me it was surealistic."

"Smiling Gator" makes you chuckle. The reptile is quite pleased with himself and seems to have been patiently laying in the mud for hours, just waiting for something really stupid to get too close. Gilchrist got away with this image and his legs.
